Jean’s Path to Balance

"...it did not take long for me to realize that my interest really had to do with all things of the body, my body and yours."

I graduated with a BA in English and Education from the University of Iowa and a Masters of Education from Stanford University. Although my education prepared me to teach school, it did not take long for me to realize that my interest really had to do with all things of the body, my body and yours.

Living in the Bay Area in the late 1960’s gave me access to some of the best yoga that was developing in the United States. Yoga gave me a way to explore my body and the mind/body connection that awareness brings.

Within a few years of study, I became certified as an Iyengar Yoga Instructor and studied with BKS Iyengar in India in 1979.

I taught yoga at the Palo Alto YMCA and through my connections, I was later invited to write the Runner’s World Yoga Book, which was published in 1979. It’s still available today as The Runner’s Yoga Book, an eBook published by Shambala Press. For years, it was cited by the Yoga Journal as the best beginner yoga book available.

Due to the recognition I received from the book, I became one of the first nationally known yoga teachers in the USA, and taught at studios throughout the country.  I was also one of the first yoga instructors to bring classes to companies and corporations nationwide. I had the opportunity to teach at the renowned Omega Institute in New York and at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, where I taught classes annually until Covid.

After a decade and a half of study and teaching yoga, I felt there was a missing element that wasn’t answered solely in my path as a yogi.

In 1988 I was introduced to “Aplomb” (French for Balance), the brilliant research of Noelle Perez. From the study of three populations – young children, traditional people, and our ancestors – she figured out how to recover our natural alignment by living on the vertical axis.

After just a few classes, I felt surprisingly “light” and tensions I had had for decades began to disappear.

I was immediately hooked.
My sciatic pain was gone.
The excessive curve in my upper back began to straighten.

In 1992, I opened the Balance Center in Palo Alto and since that time have had a full-time career teaching thousands of people how to regain their natural alignment through Balance. My mission as a teacher is to provide my students with the knowledge to be naturally aligned which eliminates pain and restores physical strength and vitality.

For three decades, I have had the privilege to teach people of all ages in schools, universities, medical centers, corporations, health & wellness centers, and yoga retreat centers. Most recently with the world opening through Zoom, people come to me from India, Europe, and all-over North America.

My teachings have been seen on KQED TV, ABC News, NPR and the Yoga Journal, Yoga International, Prevention magazine, etc.
